What to Know

My goal is to have a preemptive living kidney donor transplant.

  • Donors usually return to their normal lifestyle within 2-4 weeks post-transplant,

  • Renewal is available to cover lost wages.

  • Living kidney donation is performed laparoscopically with minimal scarring.

  • Donors do not need to take lifelong medication, nor are they restricted with their diet.

  • You don't need to be a match to help! The paired kidney program will arrange for your kidney to go to someone who is a match, and I will receive someone else's. It is a WIN, WIN for everyone!!!

Why Transplantation

About two-thirds of the approximately 20,000 kidney transplants performed each year in the U.S. are deceased-donor kidney transplants, and the remaining are living-donor kidney transplants. Kidneys from living donors can last twice as long as deceased-donor kidneys.  The demand for deceased-donor kidneys far exceeds the supply. The waiting list has grown from nearly 58,000 in 2004 to more than 100,000 in 2022. For me, in New York, the wait is 7 years.

People with end-stage kidney disease need waste removed from their bloodstream via a machine (dialysis) or a kidney transplant to stay alive. A kidney transplant is the preferred treatment for most people with advanced kidney disease or kidney failure. Compared with a lifetime on dialysis, a kidney transplant offers a lower risk of death and a better quality of life.
